Delta Killings: Military Deploys Swamp Buggies to Okuoma Amidst Rising Tensions
In response to escalating tensions, the Nigerian military has mobilized swamp buggies to the embattled Okuoma community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State. This deployment marks a continuation of the ongoing operations in the area.
Two swamp buggies, transported on trailer-trucks, were off-loaded onto barges at the Bomadi Police Division waterfront before being conveyed further into the creeks.
Last week, soldiers on a rescue mission were ambushed and killed by youths from Okuoma community, triggering a retaliatory attack resulting in the burning of houses by the military.
A source from a neighboring community confirmed the sighting of the heavy vehicles being transported through their waterways towards Okuoma, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding their mission.
Meanwhile, the detained chairman of Akugbene community in Bomadi Local Government Area, along with others, has been released from custody by the military Joint Task Force (JTF), Bomadi Division. They were detained over suspicions of harboring the fleeing chairman of Okuoma and other suspects. Their release came after they presented the alleged perpetrators under the community’s custody.
Security remains heightened in Bomadi and its surroundings, with armored vehicles and uniformed personnel stationed at strategic locations, underscoring the ongoing tensions in the state.
