Halt Excessive Summoning, Let MDA Chiefs do their Jobs, Tinubu Tells Lawmakers

President Bola Tinubu has called on members of the National Assembly to exercise restraint in summoning heads of ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) before parliamentary committees. Speaking at a Ramadan fast-breaking event in Abuja, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of oversight in maintaining transparency and accountability but cautioned against excessive summoning, citing its potential disruption to operations and service delivery.

“I have been watching various committees summoning ministers and heads of agencies. I have complained to the Speaker to let the poor breathe,” President Tinubu stated, urging lawmakers to allow officials to focus on their duties. He appealed for understanding, suggesting alternative means such as accepting representatives or documentation in certain instances to accommodate both legislative oversight and MDA responsibilities.

President Tinubu expressed confidence in the National Assembly’s commitment to good governance and praised the harmonious relationship between the executive and legislature. He commended the expeditious passage of bills aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerians and urged legislators to remember their constituencies, especially during Ramadan, by supporting the less privileged.

Regarding the recent killing of soldiers in Delta State, President Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and announced plans for a befitting burial and national honors for the fallen heroes. He emphasized the sacrifices made by Nigeria’s uniformed personnel and pledged further support for them.

In response, the Speaker emphasized the significance of forgiveness, generosity, and prayers during Ramadan and called for unity and support for President Tinubu’s administration. Reflecting on the administration’s first ten months, the Speaker highlighted the collaborative efforts between the executive and legislature for the country’s progress.

President Tinubu’s appeal underscores the delicate balance between legislative oversight and ensuring the effective functioning of government agencies. As Nigeria navigates its governance landscape, the call for discretion in summoning officials reflects a broader conversation on optimizing accountability mechanisms while fostering operational efficiency.
