Labour Party Leadership Berates House Members: ‘You’ve Failed as Ambassadors’
The Labour Party’s National Working Committee, led by Comrade Julius Abure, has strongly criticized its members in the House of Representatives for their alleged disparaging remarks against the party leadership concerning the upcoming national convention.
In a statement released in Abuja on Monday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, rebuked the House members, stating that they had failed to act as worthy ambassadors for the party.
The party leadership expressed disappointment with the House caucus for hastily resorting to the media to address internal issues that could have been resolved internally.
Ifoh particularly took issue with comments made by the LP caucus leader in the House, Hon Afam Ogene, who suggested that conducting the party’s convention before state, local government, and ward congresses was unconventional. Ifoh clarified that this stance contradicted the party’s constitution.
He emphasized that Hon. Ogene’s lack of understanding of the party’s constitution was evident and urged him to familiarize himself with it before making public statements that go against the party’s principles.
The statement underscored the importance of the caucus leader’s role in defending the party’s policies and programs in the national assembly and expressed disappointment at his alleged misinformation of party members through the media.
The party leadership also criticized Labour Party legislators for frequently resorting to the media to criticize party decisions instead of fulfilling their roles as representatives of the people and advocates for truth and justice.
The statement concluded with a warning to party members against rushing to the press with party matters, emphasizing the importance of respecting the party’s authority and internal processes. The leadership assured party members of their commitment to conducting a fair and peaceful convention through continued consultations with stakeholders at all levels.
