NLC Stands Resolute as Talks with FG Hit Stalemate – Rally Set to Proceed
In a late-night meeting at the State House in Abuja, the Federal Government and Organised Labour failed to reach consensus on Monday, casting uncertainty over the planned nationwide protest scheduled for February 27 and 28, 2024.
“The rally goes on, and it is part of their constitutional responsibility to ensure that the rally is peaceful,” emphasized Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), following the closed-door meeting with government representatives.
Chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, the meeting included key figures such as the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and ministers responsible for Labor, Agriculture, Finance, Budget & Planning, as well as the Head of Service of the Federation. Both major labor centers in the country, NLC and TUC, were also represented.
The Federal Government had urged the NLC to reconsider its protest plans, asserting that most of the union’s demands had been met, as communicated by the Minister of Information, Muhammad Idris, after the Federal Executive Council meeting.
Despite government appeals and growing economic challenges in Nigeria, including inflation, food inflation, forex crises, economic hardship, and the removal of petrol subsidy, the NLC stands resolute. Ajaero emphasized the necessity for the government to implement existing agreements with Organised Labour and address the mounting economic crisis.
