Rising Kidnappings Prompt Imo Residents to Hire Aguleri Boys, Hunters for Defense
Imo State communities, plagued by a surge in kidnapping incidents, have taken matters into their own hands. In response to the growing threat, affected communities have decided to enlist the help of local hunters and the Aguleri Boys, a vigilante group, to eliminate bandits from their forests.
The decision emerged after a meeting between traditional rulers of the affected areas and representatives of Governor Hope Uzodinmma. Concerns heightened when five decomposing bodies, including that of a woman, were discovered in a forest near the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) by the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS).
The victims, believed to be kidnapped by suspected Fulani herdsmen, were ambushed while going to or returning from their farms. The affected communities include Oforola/Olaukwu, Obinze, Avu, Ihiagwa, Nekede, Umukanne, and Obosima.
Residents now live in constant fear, avoiding farm activities and expressing concerns about their safety. The disturbing trend has impacted businesses, with an estate developer revealing a decline in patronage due to the apprehension caused by kidnappers.
Traditional rulers, acknowledging the severity of the situation, have opted to hire local hunters and the Aguleri Boys to address the menace. The paramount ruler of Olakwu/Oforola, Eze Apollo Ekeocha, highlighted the increasing hardship in his kingdom, urging security operatives to intervene.
The Imo State Police Commissioner, CP Aboki Danjuma, has taken swift action, leading raids on suspected criminals’ hideouts. The police, alongside community hunters, are intensifying efforts to locate bandits and their hideouts. CP Danjuma assured residents of the command’s commitment to eradicating criminal elements, emphasizing ongoing operations to guarantee safety in the state.
During a recent raid, five suspected kidnappers were apprehended, providing valuable information for further investigations. The Imo State Police Command remains vigilant in its pursuit of the criminals responsible for the distressing incidents, aiming to restore security and peace to the affected communities.
