Rivers Crisis: Impeachment is Constitutional, Not a Coup, Wike Tells PDP Governors
The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has made a bold statement in response to the ongoing crisis in Rivers State, firmly rejecting any attempts to intimidate him. This assertion came during a courtesy visit by the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Bala Mohammed, and his counterparts, who sought to address the turmoil in Rivers State.
Accompanying Governor Mohammed of Bauchi were Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, Caleb Muftwang of Plateau, and Agbu Kefas of Taraba. The visit was prompted by the tumultuous situation that unfolded at the Rivers House of Assembly concerning the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
It is worth noting that Nyesom Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, had actively supported the emergence of Fubara as his successor. However, their relationship soured within a short span of less than six months.
During his conversation with the visiting governors, Minister Wike emphasized that the impeachment process is a legitimate constitutional mechanism and should not be equated to a military coup. He vehemently denied any involvement in alleged misappropriation of Rivers state funds and asserted that no one could dismantle the political structure he had built in the state.
“Nobody can intimidate me. If I want to do something, I will do it. Impeachment is not a military coup; it is provided under the Constitution. I’m not interested in all the rumors, money, this, and that. Rubbish. Absolute rubbish. I just left office how many months ago? And I’m FCT Minister, so which money?” Minister Wike declared.
He further emphasized his unwavering commitment to preserving the political landscape of the state, saying, “But nobody can take away our political structure. No one. You cannot work, and people will begin to bring enemies, those who fought you when you were struggling for the person to be in office. Nobody does that. I’m not a political ingrate, but don’t touch the political structure of the state. I will not shut my eyes.”
Nyesom Wike expressed his gratitude to the Governor’s Forum for their visit and also extended his appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for appointing him as the FCT Minister. He reaffirmed his support for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Chairman Bala Mohammed of the PDP Governors’ Forum commended Minister Wike for his willingness to address the issues in Rivers State and noted that the forum had taken steps to intervene, underscoring the significance of the Rivers State matter in Nigerian politics.
