Rivers Imbroglio: Amaewhule-Led Group Reacts to Demolition of Rivers State Assembly Complex.
Oluwasegun Falade Reporting, Akure
The Rivers State House of Assembly Complex was demolished by the state government, prompting strong condemnation from the group led by Martin Amaewhule. Describing it as a “rape on the history of the state’s legislative arm,” the assembly members expressed dismay over the destruction of the complex that had housed the state’s legislative activities for many years.
The political crisis in Rivers State took another turn as the assembly members woke up to find their complex razed to the ground. George Alabo, the spokesperson for the Amaewhule-led members, expressed deep concern, stating that the demolition erased the entire history of the state’s legislature, as all documents and archives since the assembly’s inception were destroyed.
“We woke up this morning, and we were told that the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex… alongside all our documents, archives, and belongings, has been brought down,” lamented Alabo, emphasizing that the demolition occurred without warning or notice, leaving no opportunity to salvage anything.
The spokesperson expressed concern over a state high court order that restrained the Amaewhule-led group, linking it to the encouragement of the assembly complex’s demolition. Alabo criticized the court order, stating that it further fueled the destruction.
In response to the devastating incident, Alabo confirmed that the group had petitioned the National Judicial Council (NJC) against Justice Monina Danagogo, who issued the restraining order. He stated that the 27 members led by Amaewhule would convene in the coming days to decide their next course of action, emphasizing the need for justice in light of what he deemed a “fraudulent court order.”
The Rivers State political landscape remains tense as the Amaewhule-led group faces the aftermath of the assembly complex demolition, navigating legal challenges and contemplating their next move.
