Security Briefing: National Security Adviser Ribadu Honours Senate Invitation; Reveals Progress Achieved in Office.

In a closed-door meeting with Nigerian senators on Tuesday, National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu revealed crucial details about the country’s security terrain. The nine-hour session, attended by top security officials and key ministers, shed light on various aspects of Nigeria’s ongoing struggle against insecurity.

Mr. Ribadu emphasized progress in the North-east, reporting an 8% decrease in Boko Haram activities over the last six months. Notably, out of 394 attacks in 2023, only 64 occurred under the Bola Tinubu administration, showcasing a significant reduction.

The NSA highlighted a strategic shift in ISWAP’s tactics, with 78% of their attacks being defensive in 2023. This suggests a defensive posture influenced by the effectiveness of counter-terrorism strategies and military pressure.

Ribadu noted a 75% reduction in attacks by IPOB in the South-east within six months, achieved through a combination of forceful and non-violent measures. Rebuilding efforts are underway, and normalcy is gradually returning.

Positive developments were reported in the North-west and North-central, with a 45% decrease in banditry during the latter part of 2023. Mr. Ribadu claimed over 700 kidnap victims were rescued, and many communities have resumed farming activities.

Security agencies recovered and destroyed over 5,000 military-grade rifles, intercepting 20 gun-running networks. Ribadu stressed the need for good governance to address the socioeconomic conditions contributing to insecurity.

After the meeting, Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed satisfaction with the efforts to tackle security challenges, issuing a vote of confidence in the security chiefs.

Despite the positive reports, recent attacks in the North-west highlight the ongoing challenges, reinforcing the need for sustained efforts to ensure lasting security improvements.
