Senate Approves 11 Supreme Court Justices Nomination (See Full List)
The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed the nominations of 11 esteemed individuals to serve as Justices in the Supreme Court. This crucial decision, reached during Thursday’s plenary session, followed President Bola Tinubu’s request on Wednesday for the Senate’s confirmation of the nominees.
During the session, lawmakers engaged in a thoughtful debate, emphasizing the need to bolster the judiciary budget and expressing concerns about the potential negative impact of prolonged vacancies within the Supreme Court. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, led by Senator Tahir Munguno, diligently screened all 11 nominees the day before.
The Committee’s report, presented to the lawmakers, paved the way for the crucial decision made during the plenary session, as the Senate dissolved into the committee of the whole for approval. Among the newly confirmed justices is Justice Haruna Tsammani (North-East), notable for chairing the 2023 Presidential Election Petition Court.
Other distinguished appointees include Moore Adumein (South-south), Jummai Sankey (North-central), Chidiebere Uwa (South-east), Chioma Nwosu-Iheme (South-east), Obande Ogbuinya (South-east), Stephen Adah (North-central), Habeeb Abiru (South-west), JJamilu Tukur (North-west), Abubakar Umar (North-west) and Mohammed Idris (North-central).
This affirmative move by the Senate aligns with the recommendations put forth by the National Judicial Council and responds to President Bola Tinubu’s call for the confirmation of these 11 nominees. The decision reflects a commitment to upholding the integrity and effectiveness of the nation’s highest court.
